Byggmaterialhandlarna (BMH) has decided to introduce a new industry-wide solution for how product information is shared and managed. The decision is based on a preliminary study that identified a need for higher data quality, greater control and more consistent information flows between retailers and suppliers.
The solution involves a transition from the Vilma standard to GS1 Trade Item Information and the GDSN-certified datapool Validoo. The change also includes new processes for sharing and exchanging product information.
The work to implement the new solution is under way, with the aim of completing the transition during the fourth quarter of 2027. Information about the timeline, guidelines and supporting materials will be shared on an ongoing basis with industry stakeholders.
Stable technical platform
GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network) is an international network for exchanging product information. It is based on common standards that enable companies to share accurate and structured product data with their trading partners.
GDSN uses data pools to upload and synchronise information. The Swedish data pool Validoo will be used within the building materials trade. Through Validoo, suppliers can share their master data in a standardised process, creating a consistent and reliable information chain between suppliers and retailers.
Mapping between Vilma and GS1 Trade Item Information
This Excel file provides an overview of the terms included in GS1’s Swedish data model for trade item information. It shows how fields from Vilma correspond to the data model, as well as which terms have been added where there is no corresponding Vilma field. The document also includes information about connections to additional services and supplementary descriptions of the various fields.

User groups and opportunities to get involved
In Sweden, GS1 standards, solutions and services are developed and maintained together with GS1 Sweden’s users through user groups, industry groups and reference groups. By participating in GS1 Sweden’s user groups, customers can help shape standards and processes while gaining inspiration, greater knowledge and a broader understanding of how GS1 standards work. In 2028, once the transition has been completed, a user group for the building materials trade will be established.
The purpose of the user groups is to facilitate the implementation of GS1 standards, both locally and globally. Together, participants in the user groups interpret GS1 standards and propose improvements at a global level. Where necessary to meet business needs, GS1 Sweden also provides local recommendations on how the standards should be applied.
