Help Shape the Future of Digital Product Passport Standards – Public Review Open Until 1 September 2025

Organizations across the EU now have a unique opportunity to influence the development of future standards for Digital Product Passports (DPP). Eight proposed European standards have been published for public review, and feedback can be submitted until 1 September 2025.

Digital Product Passports – A Tool for the Transition

The European Commission has identified DPPs as a cornerstone in the shift toward a more sustainable and circular economy. The goal is to make sustainable products the default, and digital passports are essential to achieving that vision.

By simply scanning a product, stakeholders across the value chain can access reliable information about:

  • Product composition and specifications
  • Origin of raw materials
  • Climate and environmental impact
  • Repair, reuse, and recycling options

To ensure seamless functionality, common standards are required, and now is the time to help shape them.

Why Your Organization Should Get Involved

A Digital Product Passport consolidates critical information that follows a product throughout its lifecycle. Standardized DPPs enable greater transparency, more efficient reuse, and a shared language for sustainability data – regardless of industry or geography.

By participating in the public review process, you can:

  • Ensure the proposals are relevant and applicable to your operations
  • Prepare for upcoming regulatory requirements
  • Highlight sector-specific needs that might otherwise be overlooked
  • Contribute to harmonized solutions with global applicability

GS1 Standards as the Foundation for Effective DPPs

GS1 Sweden is actively engaged in the standardization process and leads the working group on identification and labeling. Our global standards are already used by millions of companies worldwide and are particularly well-suited for DPPs. They enable:

  • Unique product identification (e.g., via GTIN)
  • Standardized labeling (e.g., using 2D codes)
  • Real-time traceability (e.g., via EPCIS)
  • Secure data sharing (e.g., via GS1 Digital Link)

Building DPPs on established GS1 standards ensures scalable, interoperable solutions that are ready for global trade from day one.

How to Submit Your Feedback

The public review is managed by the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS). All stakeholders including companies, public authorities, industry organizations, and civil society are welcome to contribute.

Follow these steps:

  1. Review the instructions: SIS Instructions
  2. Visit the SIS review portal: https://kommentera.sis.se/
  3. Explore the proposed standards
  4. Submit your comments by 1 September 2025

From Technical Requirement to Strategic Opportunity

Digital Product Passports are more than a technical solution, they represent a strategic opportunity to foster a more sustainable, transparent, and competitive European business landscape. By engaging in the review process, you help ensure that the new standards are practical and aligned with real-world needs.

GS1 in Europe has already demonstrated how our standards can serve as the backbone of functional DPP systems with global reach, proven technology, and a common language for data across the value chain.
