On August 22, 2026, GS1 Trade Item information and the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) will be updated to version 3.1.36.
This update introduces new terms for the building materials trade. It also includes new rules for beverage suppliers, as well as codes and validation rules that further enhance data quality across many industries.
New terms for the building materials trade
To meet the industry’s need for structured and standardized product information, additional new terms are being introduced. This is part of the transition from the Vilma standard to GS1 standards.
Among other things, the new terms make it possible to:
- Indicate whether an item is a promotional item or a service
- describe the order size factor
- Specify the supplementary product class in a more structured way
New rules regarding cans of alcoholic beverages
New validation rules are now being introduced for beverage cans delivered to Systembolaget. The goal is to ensure accurate measurements and to facilitate logistics and handling at the recipient’s facility.
Among other things, this means that:
- The can type must be specified for beverage cans in T4237 Packaging feature code, if the code CNG-Can has been specified in T0137 Packaging Type code
- Dimensions are automatically checked based on the selected can type and net content

Updated validation rules
Certain validation rules have been updated to improve data quality and ensure that product information is accurate, complete, and consistent throughout the entire information chain.
This includes, among other things:
New Requirements for Mandatory Information
For certain product categories, clearer requirements are being introduced to ensure that critical information is always provided, such as the alcohol content of beverages, the reference amount in nutrition information, and complete information about the brand owner.
Improved control on format and content
New rules ensure that data is entered correctly—for example, that image links are in a valid format (http/https) and that tariff classifications have the correct number of digits.
For customs codes, please refer to the Swedish Customs Service.
Extended Logic Rules
Rules are being introduced to ensure that information is consistent and does not contradict itself. This may involve connections between diet classifications or restrictions on how many times certain information may be listed for two terms in the construction industry.
