Implementation of 2D in Retail

The purpose of the industry group is to support brand owners and retailers in their preparation to work towards the industry-defined goal of enabling the next generation of 2D codes with GS1 standards to be used and read in store POS systems by the end of 2027, through a competitive-neutral collaboration among actors in the retail and grocery trade.

Goals

  • To be a forum for actors within retail to share insights and collaborate to achieve common goals.
  • To identify and address common needs and issues.
  • To disseminate knowledge and information within the field.

Background

Currently, there is a global transition where brand owners and retailers are collaborating to label packaging with both traditional barcodes and 2D codes (QR codes with GS1 standards, GS1 DataMatrix, and Data Matrix). The programme is driven by leading global actors and encompasses all product categories within the retail and grocery trade, including variable weight items.

The common ambition within global retail is for the next generation of 2D codes with GS1 standards to be usable in store environments (alongside existing barcodes) and readable in POS systems by the end of 2027. Different parts of the world will progress towards this goal at different rates. The global 2D programme coordinates activities together with key actors worldwide.
