Background

Traceability is defined by many businesses as a prerequisite for achieving set sustainability and operational goals. Companies responsible for placing products on the EU market currently have an increased need to document their value chains by sharing information about what has been manufactured and delivered and when, where, why, and to whom — all the way from raw material to finished product.

The need for traceability is driven in large part by legislation such as EUDR, ESPR, and CSRD. New requirements for detailed and standardized information throughout the distribution chain aim to enable transparency for authorities, companies, and consumers. As a result, many companies are asking how best to implement an effective, standards-based traceability solution.

About the Framework

The framework is based on the traceability methodology GS1 TraceWay and global GS1 standards. Its purpose is to strengthen companies’ ability to meet future traceability requirements and satisfy business needs. It is aimed at suppliers and retailers that need to implement a traceability solution.

The framework has been developed in collaboration between GS1 Sweden and GS1 users from various parts of the grocery value chain; the recommendations can be used for different kinds of supply chains.
