In the latest generation of TCO Certified, launched on December 4, 2024, a new criterion called &#8220;Unique Product Identifier&#8221; has been introduced. These updated requirements mandate that certified products must be equipped with a URL-based unique product identifier, enabling traceability and improving transparency throughout the product lifecycle. Additionally, brand owners are required to submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/identify\/global-trade-item-number-gtin\/\">Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)<\/a> for certified products to TCO Development.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By assigning certified products a unique identity and linking certification information through a digital URL embedded in a <a href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/qr\/\">QR code<\/a> on the product, transparency is significantly improved. The QR code serves as a communication channel between the brand and the end user, facilitating extended product lifespans\u2014for instance, by offering warranty extensions, ordering spare parts, or supporting reverse logistics and take-back systems. With accurate and comparable information, both brands and buyers can make informed decisions and measure their sustainability progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For over 30 years, TCO Certified has been a driving force for sustainability in the IT industry, setting requirements for social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and product performance. Globally recognized, the certification serves as a trusted guide for purchasers and organizations seeking sustainable IT products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-the-gs1-standards-requirements-involve\">What do the GS1 standards requirements involve?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>TCO Certified mandates the use of GTIN and a URL-based unique product identifier. For the URL-based identifier, TCO Certified strongly recommends the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/gs1-digital-link\/\">GS1 Digital Link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GTIN is a global standard for product identification, widely used across supply chains to enhance clarity and efficiency in product flows. By requiring brand owners to submit GTINs for their certified products, TCO Certified aims to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enhance traceability of certified products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure accurate linkage between the product and its certification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Facilitate identification of certified products in databases and procurement systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>GS1 Digital Link is a standard that connects physical products to digital information. When combined with a two-dimensional carrier such as a QR code, it allows rich product information to be shared across the value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-tco-certified-works\">How TCO Certified works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>TCO Certified is an independent third-party certification that sets requirements for both products and production processes. Certification involves a rigorous testing and verification process conducted by accredited test laboratories.
