The case is often the item level that can be ordered from supplier or wholesaler. When the outer packaging is numbered with a GS1 item number, it cannot be confused with an case for another product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of marking the outer packaging takes place in three steps: Create item numbers for the case, select a barcode type and mark the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-create-item-number-for-the-case\">1. Create item number for the case<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you mark your case with a barcode, the packaging must be numbered with a GS1 item number \u2013 a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number). There are two types of item numbers that you can choose: GTIN-13 or GTIN-14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your case <strong>is to be <\/strong>read at a checkout point in a store <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/product\/gs1-artikelnummer-gtin\/#nav-pane-1\" target=\"_blank\">create GTIN-13<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your case is <strong>not<\/strong> going to be read at a checkout point in a store <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/identify\/gtin-14\/\" target=\"_blank\">create GTIN-14.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"351\" height=\"131\" src=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/gtin-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1921\" style=\"width:405px;height:151px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/gtin-13.png 351w, https:\/\/gs1.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/gtin-13-300x112.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-select-barcode-type\">2. Select barcode type<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common barcode types in the GS1 system are EAN-13, GS1-128 and ITF-14. What barcode type you use depends on, for example, the type of packaging and where in the flow of goods the barcode will be read, for example at a checkout point or in a warehouse. Read more about the barcode types to find out which one fits your case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/ean-13-and-ean-8\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/ean-13-and-ean-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The EAN-13<\/a> is used for consumer and outer packaging that will be read at a checkout point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/itf-14\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/itf-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ITF-14<\/a> is used to label outer packaging. ITF-14 is a durable barcode that can be printed directly on, for example, corrugated board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/gs1-128\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/gs1.se\/en\/standards-and-services\/gs1-128\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GS1-128<\/a> is used to label outer packaging and pallets. GS1-128 can carry additional information other then item number, for example date or batch number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-label-the-case\">3.
